Intermodal Transport at Omida VLS. Will this be the transport of the future?

Omida VLS is investing in new solutions for its customers. In 2022, we will receive 200 semi-trailers intended for intermodal transport.

Intermodal semi-trailers manufactured for Omida by Wielton will enable the transport of goods using one loading unit along the entire route, without the need to reload goods. This is a very important step for our brand, which is one of the elements included in the sustainable development strategy of OMIDA Group for 2021-2023. What is the alternative to road transport?

We have been involved in road transport for over 10 years and we are perfectly familiar with the essence and value of this form of transport. Road transport, especially in Europe, enables maintaining the supply chain in all sectors of the economy. This applies to both local, national deliveries, as well as deliveries made under intra-Community agreements between producers and distributors of products and industry giants with an extensive network of factories, warehouses and stores.

Without road transport, the development and functioning of the economy of the entire Europe would be at risk. Considering the importance of this form of transport, but at the same time taking into account the impact of energy consumption and harmful impact on the environment, we decided to invest in semi-trailers designed for intermodal transport.

This solution will allow the transport of goods using an ecological form of transport, which is electric rail for 80%-90% of the route, and 10%-20%, i.e. transfer to and from the terminal by locally contracted carriers in the same semi-trailer without the need to reload the goods.

What are the benefits of intermodal transport?

Recent years have shown how important it is to get ahead and think about ecological solutions, especially in transport. By using intermodal transport, we ensure a 60% reduction in exhaust fumes and thus offer our customers a reduction in the carbon footprint of their products. The vision of green transformation is even more real due to the perception of the need to expand the rail infrastructure in our country and the European Union. We feel responsible for the environment and if we have the opportunity to choose more or less ecological solutions, the choice is obvious for us. By properly managing cargo transport and using the new infrastructure between sea and rail terminals, we can even better optimize transport processes for our customers. In this way, we will save time, money and ensure the continuity of deliveries at specific time intervals.

Why did we choose intermodal transport?

Our investment in intermodal transport is dictated by the sustainable development strategy planned for the Omida Group.

The key goals for this project are:

  • Providing an ecological form of transport for our customers
  • Increasing loading and transport capabilities on specific routes
  • Improving the supply chain management process using a partner network and local road carriers

An important aspect of choosing this direction is the vision of future transport based on ecological solutions, digital automation, process automation and loading and storage space management systems within the OMIDA Group. It is this vision of the future that motivates us to meet the requirements that our planet places before us.
